World Allergy Week — Eye Allergy/Allergic Conjunctivitis Awareness
April 7-13 is World Allergy Week. The subject changes yearly, and this year's focus on food allergy is not particularly germane to the eyes. Still, the topic of allergy is pertinent as the season is right upon us.
There are many reasons that the eyes can get red, but allergic conjunctivitis has a very distinguishable characteristic...itching. If your eyes aren't itchy, it probably isn't allergy that is bothering them.
According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), close to 40% of Americans suffer from allergic conjunctivitis. It is not something to be taken lightly because it can have a major impact on quality of life. This is unfortunate because there are medications, both prescription and non-prescription that are very effective.
Not all of the over-the-counter medications created equally. In fact, some, probably the most recognizable ones, can create long term dependence and have detrimental eye health side effects. Others simply don't work.
If your eyes become red and itchy this season, call to make an appointment so that we can discuss the most appropriate treatments.
